Basics of Zoom : Connecting to Zoom

Guide for basic use of Zoom

Connecting

You should have been provided a meeting URL by your instructor, usually something like:

https://utsalib.zoom.us/j/2104586654

This may have been provided through chat or in the form of an email invitation similar to the one shown below.

The URL will lead you to this Zoom page which should prompt you to open Zoom, or download it if you have not already done so.

* Select Remember my choice for zoommtg links to automatically open Zoom the next time you follow a Zoom Meeting URL.

Connecting Audio

When your meeting first opens, you should be prompted to join the meeting using Computer Audio or Phone Call.

If your computer does not have a microphone or you'd prefer to use your phone for audio, you can choose Phone Call and a number to call in will be provided. Select Done after you have called in.

If you are using your computers mic and speakers, select Join with Computer Audio.

Note: You may be prompted by Windows or macOS to allow Zoom to access your camera and/or microphone, you should allow this.

If your audio settings are not configured, or if you would just like test that your settings are correct, click Test Speaker and Microphone, then follow the prompts shown below.

Generally Audio Settings should be left at default settings, however if you are using a desktop (or laptop with no built in mic), it may be necessary to check or change these settings later. The audio menu can be accessed by selecting the dropdown beside the mic symbol on the Zoom Toolbar (labeled Manage mic & speakers in the Home Screen image on the next page).

*If you are unable, or prefer not, to use audio you can still communicate with your librarian using text, see Chat on the next page.

Waiting Room

If your instructor is not yet online, you may or may not be dropped into a virtual waiting room (this depends on your librarian's settings). Entering the waiting room also notifies your librarian (via email) that you have opened Zoom and are ready for the meeting.
