Radical Labor and Artisan Movements libguide

Literature Review is a process!

What is a literature review? :

A synthesis of studies on any given topic

Typically comes before a full-length original study as a way of introducing the general topic.

The purpose: To help the reader understand the background of your study and see how it’s the next logical study to be conducted in this domain.

A solid literature review requires a thoroughly researched topic.

Takes a lot of time! Please be prepared!.  Do not attempt to write a literature review in one evening or the morning before class. This is a process it can take some time.

Literature Review: Preparations

Topic selection and narrowing down a topic so it is specific.  For example, I am writing and researching about "cars", however, I really want to write and research about Tesla. Remember to research your topic and maybe do some more research if it does not provide the proper fit. In addition, if you are searching for articles that have statistics that support your thesis -- please consult with a librarian to find the best data.

Evaluating,Interpreting, and Synthesizing!

A literature review provides the reader with analysis and synthesizes a given article -- you are providing NOT a summary! You are taking it a few steps further by using your critical thinking skills to provide an evaluation

5 Steps to success!

Step 1. Choose your TOPIC

Step 2.  Evaluate the sources you choose and determine the actual scope -- how many resources do I need, do I need more articles or do switch an article, how comprehensive should this be, and review the syllabus or see your instructor during office hours if confused.

Step 3. Review! Start analyzing and searching for major themes within your articles.

Step 4. Outline and Organize

Step5. Start writing!

Tips

What was the research question in the article? What it is trying to prove or further? Step further what is the thesis of the article?

What were the authors trying to discover?

Is the research biased or funded by a particular group that has a hidden agenda? For example, Facebook paid for this research on censorship

Are there conflicting studies? For example, fossil fuels.

How was research conducting and what were the methodologies? Make sure you actually analyze the article!  Is the research be complete? What other questions does it raise? Is there more room for study?

Is the author authority in the field? An expert on the subject.
