Basics of ebooks

Marymount Manhattan College's library has an extensive collection of ebooks made available through our subscription databases. This guide has been designed to help students and faculty gain a better understanding of the need for and use of ebooks and how to search for them and access them via our library's subscription databases.

What is an ebook?

An ebook is a book that has been converted to a digital format or was digitally born. For example,  Hamilton and Philosophy are both a print book and an ebook.

Do ebooks use different formats?

Yes, all e-books are books that are either produced (“born”) digitally from the start or are converted from hardcopy to digital. E-books usually come in two formats. The older of the two is Portable Document Format, or .pdf. As .pdfs can be created using widely available hardware and software, students will find professors and databases use .pdf most frequently. A more recent development is the e-pub, or Electronic Book Publication, which publishers use to create books that are “reflowable,” easy to view on different devices.

What a permalinks?

Permalinks are URLs intended to be always reachable. It can differ from the URL seen in the address bar; that URL may pick up extra coding as it passes from server to server. Permalinks for books from MMC’s collection begin with “proxy prefix,” a kind of area code indicating the book is stored on an MMC server: https://slb.mmm.edu/login?url= . MMC’s main e-book providers, ProQuest/ Ebook Central and Ebsco, both provide permalinks for their e-books.
