Finding Books

The  Library has physical books, e-book, and journal we have is discoverable through the MMC Quick Search.  You can search the catalog using the box below.

Locating Books on the Shelves

When you find a book in the catalog, you'll see its call number.  This is the string of letters and numbers that lets you track the book down on the shelf.

The MMC library does not use the Dewey Decimal System.  Instead, we organize our books using the Library of Congress classification system. In this system, books are arranged by topic.  When you find one book on a topic, there are likely other useful books nearby on the shelf.

Each call number starts with a sequence of letters, then numbers, then usually more letters and more numbers.  For example, the call number for To Kill a Mockingbird is:

PS3562.E353 T6 1982

To locate this book, you would go to the floor with the P's, and then find the PS's.  Then, within the PS's, you would locate the number 3562.  Within the 3562's, you would locate the E's.  And so on.

You Can Do This

The biggest difference between high school libraries and academic libraries?: the amount of information you can access and the amount of support you will receive.

We know there's a lot to take in about college-level research: books, journals, databases, citing sources.  Remember that a librarian is always happy to assist you with your research or answer question.

Finding Articles

Articles are published in journals. This is the main way that researchers communicate their research to the world.  Other, less "researchy" articles are printed in magazines and newspapers.

Databases are how you can search for articles.  The MMC library subscribes to a wide variety of databases, which you CAN access because you're a student. For off-campus access please click here
